Project 2: Branding the Fringe

The New Aesthetic

James Bridle

The fringe or avant-garde refers to people or works that are experimental or innovative, particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics. This force represents a pushing of the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm or the status quo, primarily in the cultural realm.

How can you use graphic design—words, images, media—to express the ideas that represent this edge? What forms and methods of distribution (social media, print, installation, etc.) can you exploit to realize your intentions?

Readings for Thursday, Oct 1 (Ashley leads discussion):
Themes of Contemporary Art
Contemporary Graphic Design (this is mostly about style – more about looking than reading)

What is Contemporary? (this is a bit dense)

For the writing exercise – due Tuesday – here are some examples.
